ABOUT

The Gallery, located in Santander, was opened to general public in 1988 under the name of its founder, Fernando Silió. From its origins, the style of the Gallery leads towards the most avant-garde tendencies of Contemporary Art, combining exhibitions by well-known artists with young ones who are establishing their positions within the art market.
In 1999 Juan Silió, son of the founder, takes on the direction of the Gallery and starts to change the line of the Gallery, incorporating artists of international renown, increasing the presence of new technology and photographic works as well as young artists.
In photographic we began working with the main representatives of Spanish art outside our borders, such as Chema Alvargonzález, Joan Fontcuberta and Mayte Vieta, while opportunities are given to new values of this field as Michael Najjar, Carlos Irijalba, Ixone Sádaba or Miguel Ángel Tornero.
The interest in photography does not remove of the gallery´s calender other artists working in different techniques such as Antoni Muntadas, Juan Uslé, Fernando Sánchez Castillo, Bosco Sodi, Juan López or Alain Urrutia.
In 2006, after the founder’s passed away, the Gallery name was changed, being presented in ARCO 2007 for the first time under the current name Galería Juan Silió.
In parallel with the exhibition program in our space, the gallery attends both national as international art fairs such as ARCO, VOLTA NY, ArteLisboa, Zona MACO, Context Art New York and Miami or ArteSantander, among others.

Exhibitor's Artists:

  • Rafa Macarrón  (+)

Biography : Macarrón creates unique characters that reclaim the attention of each piece and that incarnate both the universal and the unrepeatable. We can observe the design of the bodies of the main characters: humans and animals of legs way too long to resist the weight of their heads. The figures are always portrayed on a neutral background: blue, pink, water green; and in every scene the line that cuts the vertical plan of the background with the horizontal one is the only line that we recognize as a feature of our world. On his paintings, Macarrón creates dream-like scenarios and a world of uncommon characters that, despite their drama and deformity, bear tenderness and kindness. With a defined style and language, his drawing is fluid, fresh and harmonic. Influenced by the comic, 50’s and 60’s painting, Dubuffet, Fraile, Matta or Quirós, Macarrón is becoming a referent of today’s painting. Winner of the BMW painting prize in 2011, he has been present in diverse countries and has participated in numerous fairs, such as Zona Maco, ArtBo, Art Miami or Art Moscow.
