ABOUT

The audience of our contemporary art exhibitions has increased considerably in the recent years with the awareness-raising and the expansion of foreign interest in Colombia’s art as well. Since 1998, when Galería Casa Cuadrada opened its doors for the first time, we have focused to increase public interest in contemporary art, turning it into new processes axis, movements and schemes to renew the Colombian Art scene. We have worked with and pushed forward different artists who have exhibited their art pieces in Galería Casa Cuadrada. Several of those artists have boosted their careers and have turned this cultural space into a springboard for young artists.

In 2002 we started an art promotion and dissemination effort nationwide with the sponsorship of private institutions and our participating in international art fairs. In addition, we have created the National Art Exhibition – DIVERSIDAD – for young Colombian artists. Now we have almost 20 year experience in the art scene in Colombia, so we have decided to design a formation camp for foreign artists, within an exhibition exchange program between art galleries and institutions that support creative projects worldwide. At this time, agreements have been set on the table to work with institutions around Europe and together develop plastic art projects, so we can achieve our main goal: build up a co-working network for artistic residences for Colombians.

Detailed Description : With the phrase "Time heals everything" begins a new phase in the work. The integration of this new idea in development work involves mixing an erotic party that has always been present as based on the thoughts that are broken down to produce feelings of pleasure, pain and control mentioned in the panoptic theory of Michel Foucault, autobiographical traits based on the development of sexuality as an individual outside of Sigmund Freud also, the "Peste Rosa" or AIDS seen as divine punishment that comes directly from the hand of God to expose the unclean man to public chastisement and image basis of purgatory as a fictional field for the development of this metaphorical idea where good and evil are intertwined closely with each other, subtly defined by the collective consciousness rather than by the desire itself of the individual. The notion of time escapes from our hands and we do not realize. They say: "Time and forgetfulness are like twins, you will be forgetting someone that someday you were longing". A day and one day less. The recent series "The threads cover everything" entails time as determinant factor in it development. Based on the above principles, action work on something for months gives space for this reflation about what he does and undoes and what they can do. He does not decide everything, we make the decisions and he gives us space to think and then decide. The fabric pieces used are part of known people, which leads to a very personal symbolic meaning to be used in a imaginary memories quilt, which threads connect, mix and cover to create a new form of feel them. Time does not heal wounds, only he manages to hide them, adapt and it is the one that do not forgives sin in them, for this reason the purgatory is still present in the formats randomly baked on canvas. Time is for moments irrational and nonexistent, instead of time exists motion, without movement there is no time, all movement ends like our time. One who does not remember the past are c

  • Edgar Plans  (+)

Biography : One of the few things that I can say with 100% certainty is that I was born in Madrid in 1977. If I am asked when I started to paint or indeed why, well that’s something I can’t define so easily. I can say how and where, using pencils and crayons on every wall within reach, outside the house in Majadahonda, on the nursery walls and the pavements. The when is the most difficult, since creativity and the arts were always present and encouraged at home, my earliest memory is the sound of the my father’s typewriter (Juan Jose Plans, 1943-2014). In his office there was a low table with four chairs, and there I would sit drawing with my brothers while my father would write. I never faced any restrictions, only encouragement for my need to draw and paint. In fact when we moved to Gijón in 1985 I was put into a class…not because I wanted to but because my sister wanted to go and “useful” to have us at the same class. However I have never wanted to draw what other people would suggest. I liked to draw comic strips, short stories, not still-lives of bowls of fruit, nor charcoal sketches of plaster-of-paris figures….so I didn’t go much. It wasn’t until I was 15 when I decided to learn more. I don’t know why but I felt I needed to learn more disciplines and techniques. In the studio of José María Ramos I learnt to express what I wanted via painting and drawing. After two years in the workshop I realised that I wanted to not have anyone looking over my shoulder to correct and guide me through my faults, and needed to work alone and find my own ways. I rented a room in an art studio – previously an apartment belonging to Nicanor Piñole, an important asturian artist – and in that attic I began my own path. Currently I have my own studio where I continue to look for my own path, between my faults and truths. I've always liked street art. Urban art. It is an art that I see very free, just like when children create. And I have want

  • Alvaro Perez

Biography : The standardization of objects after the Industrial Revolution provokes feeling of belonging to traditional social groups, but in the new generations the standardization causes rejection because the subject pursues its authenticity and originality. Thus, products are intervened with characteristics different from their initial production and are "customized”. Álvaro Pérez, an artist trained in the world of industrial design, clearly knows the processes of the sphere of design and incorporates them critically in his work. In formal terms, the extensive knowledge of the materials is crucial to achieve the high quality of these interventions. These interventions or re-elaborations reach their critical climax when using color as an element that questions the initial reading of the object, detonating in this way, a flow of associations.
