Detailed Description : Kotaro Fukui works mainly focus on two motifs, ostriches and flowers. His work addresses themes of nature, body and eastern spirituality. The eloquent "Flightless" series investigates movement using lines that portraying orstriches. The rotund shape and rich black coloring of the ostrich's body is in juxtaposition with the linear shape of the bird's extended neck. This sets the stage for the magnetism of opposites. The "Silent Flowers" series parades luscious blue Iris motifs across brilliand, majestic gold backgrounds. His work is notably steeped in the tradition of Nihonga (Japanese painting) and modern Japanese avant-garde. The materials he uses are the tough plant fiber "washi", a traditional Japanese paper. Traditional Japanese paintings also use natural mineral piegments and Indian ink.
