  • Jojo Anavim  (+)

Biography : Blurring the line between mass consumerism and fine art, NYC based artist Jojo Anavim has established his body of work stemming from a background in con- sumer marketing and brand development. Previously a creative consultant for brands such as W Hotels, and Universal Music Group, Anavim crossed over to fine art in 2013. His work continually employs rich and vibrant color palates, vintage ephemera, alongside subversive and playful imagery paying homage to contemporary art greats Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. As a child Anavim enrolled in art classes taught by Disney animator Al Baruch, cre- ator of the legendary characters Captain Hook and Mighty Mouse. Anavim credits Baruch with instilling a creative confidence that led him to embrace art as more than a hobby early in his life. Much of Anavim’s work depict the nostalgia of the brands and packaging he was surrounded by during this time - down to the LifeSavers his grand- mother would always carry in her purse. Anavim’s artworks are part of permanent collections in museums and hotels around the globe - including Dream’s Downtown and Midtown Hotel, New York, NY; Co- ca-Cola Archives Museum, Atlanta, GA; New York Yankees City Seats Collection, New York, NY; and Surf Lodge Hotel, Montauk, NY. Anavim is also recognized for his commissions for NBA players, business moguls and top-charting musicians including Amar’e Stoudemire, Seth McFarlane, Selena Gomez, Big Sean, Sheldon Adelson, Paris Hilton and Daymond John. Anavim’s work has been covered by global media publications including The New York Times, New York Post, Business Insider and Forbes - all highlighting the success of his career.

  • Philip Buller  (+)

Biography : Born to diplomat parents, Philip Buller spent his formative years in vastly different cultures in India, Africa, Washington DC and New England. The young artist was encouraged by his family to explore his creativity in a variety of areas, and Philip developed an avid interest in music and visual arts. He studied graphic design, toured as a musician, and worked as a builder before formally studying painting and drawing at the California College of Arts and Crafts, where he received his MFA in 1994. Compositionally intriguing, Buller’s paintings at first glance present a visual chaos of patterns and figurative elements. Upon closer inspection, however, they resolve into a sometimes dense layering of forms and figures, some distinct and detailed and others merely hinted at with lush, summary brushstrokes. His compositions cohere as a result of the dynamic relationships between forms and color, and by a rhythmic quality that pulses across the canvas. Buller’s paintings are executed in part by utilizing a technique that involves painting directly onto metal screen mesh, which is then applied directly onto the canvas, transferring the imprint of the mesh along with the image itself. The process, which has its roots in printmaking and reflects the artist’s background in graphic design, allows Buller to marry traditional subject matter with a more modern technical approach. “I apply paint, remove paint – creating and obscuring forms. A form must be fully realized before it can be obscured. The ambiguity of a blurred image often encourages me to reach below a literal interpretation of form.” – Philip Buller

Biography : My works are stories. I communicate them through color, shapes, drips, heavy strokes, stains. They come from experiences. Conversations. Missed opportunities. They come from joy. Pain. They are songs I listen to. Nights of drinking. They are from losses in life. Women I still think of. Moments of laughter. Highs and lows. Sunsets. Road trips. They are my friends. My family. They are feelings and thoughts that are put on a canvas. I am in most control when I am out of control. Stepping out of my comfort zone makes me feel comfortable. It’s when I make mistakes that I do right. And it’s when I go in the wrong way that I find myself in the right direction. I can’t promise to reach all of you through a piece of work, but I can promise to reach you with honesty. All I can hope for, is for you to be able to feel something, whatever it may be. It’s a beautiful thing to be provoked by art and transplanted back into something you’ve felt or be faced with something you’ve dreamt of. And if I can do that for you, then I thank you. Because like all art, life itself is abstract. -Greg Vrotsos
